Sugar… The Silent Killer!

God is there anything better than a cup of tea and a Mars bar? Or that first (and second….and third!) bite of a freshly baked queen cake with velvety smooth buttercream or a sugar-coated doughnut that envelops that sweet oozy jam center! OH LORD JESUS……Why does it taste so good!!!!😋

But as good as it tastes just think about your body. I’m a huge advocate of ‘everything in moderation’ and always believe you should have a little of what you fancy but draw the line at that! Our body is the only thing we have to live in, so take care of it as best you can. Give your body what it needs, not what it wants!

Analogies are something I use a lot of because I think it simplifies things and people can often relate to it by thinking in a different way. In fact if you are a sásta regular then you will have no doubt heard me use an analogy on you or been in earshot of one! I’m not great at reading body language but I think rolling your eyes up to heaven every time i use one is a good sign, isn’t it?! 🤔😀

So here is a regular one I use……Most people value their car, its a big investment in life and something that needs to be kept in good working order, especially with the NCT fail rate in this country! So ask yourself, would you put contaminated or dirty petrol/diesel in your car? Simple answer is no. And your reason? The damage it would cause of course. So why do it to your body, do you not value it as much as your car? If you don’t then you need a head check! Now its easy to get in to bad habits where food is concerned but that doesn’t mean you cant turn it around, you just need a full service, fresh oil and a bit of TLC! In other words, break your old habits and start eating clean and exercising your heart and muscles. The rest will follow….

But back to sugar. There is increasing research to suggest that it’s the sugar rather than the fat in our diets that is the major contributing factor to our obesity epidemic. The problem for the majority of us is that many of the processed foods we eat have added sugar that supplies energy in the form of calories, and very little else, so we end up consuming more than we need. A high intake of sugar causes our blood sugar levels to shoot up, giving us that feel-good ‘high’ followed by a crashing slump that leaves us tired, irritable and craving more sugary foods. It’s a vicious cycle that is a contributing factor to our weight issues as well as health conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

Understanding the insulin/glucose mechanism in the body

When we eat foods that raise our blood sugar, the body produces insulin to cleanse the blood of what the body essentially views as a toxin. Insulin grabs the sugar, called glucose, and looks around for a place to store it and get it out of the bloodstream so the body doesn’t suffer harm. First choice is the liver, which is the body’s “short term” storage for glucose. But the storage capacity in the liver is limited. Second choice is the muscles, which for those of us not in extremely physical jobs or lifting heavy weights daily, just do not have enough available storage for all the sugar most of us unknowingly consume. Last resort is the fat cells, which can be produced by the body as needed to store unneeded sugar. Insulin shepherds the sugar into the fat cells and slams the door shut.

As you can see above excess sugar intake is strongly associated with weight gain, even in people who exercise regularly.And sugar is in almost everything as you can see below.
